"Masters of Primitivo"
- Region
- Puglia — Manduria
- Current owner
- Cooperative of ~400 winegrowing families
Who does not know the world-famous appellation “Primitivo di Manduria”? Manduria, a charming town in the province of Taranto, is known worldwide as the capital of Primitivo. In 1932 the “Fondazione Vini” was founded here, a legal cooperative that began to market Primitivo wine.
The first aim was to make wine for the members of the cooperative, as a form of payment. Producing quality wine was not immediately the ambition. Over recent decades, however, the wine market changed and evolved. With falling wine consumption, cooperatives gradually began to focus more on quality than on quantity, which also changed their focus: they are starting to address the consumer more directly.
Today the cooperative has 400 members. It has 900 hectares of land, worked by 400 people who are called “Maestri di Primitivo”. The scaling up and pooling of forces has made important investments possible, both in technology and in human capital. The result is quality and high-class wines that are appreciated worldwide.
